Studiologic Cmk 149 Manualidades
I figured that if anyone would know the answer to this question, it would be you guys: Is there a product that will convert from usb-midi to the old 5-wire midi? I have seen a few keyboards come out with only USB-MIDI available (i.e. No traditional midi connectivity). I'd like to use one of these products (LPK25) to run an old GM synth module (SC-55). I have been unable to find such a product, and I'm thinking I'm going to have to make a DIY solution.

I currently use the LPK25 along with a netbook running liveprofessor with a free low-cpu (and low quality) piano VST. I want to consolidate this setup (and give my wife her netbook back) by switching to a sound module, but there does not seem to be a USB sound module, nor a small, cheap DIN midi controller.
I've used a micron in the past for this purpose, but it was a little too large and traveling with a 300$ board in my luggage rattles my nerves. Thanks for the links, this at least tells me what these devices are even called. #2344911 - 10/03/11 11:42 AM Re: Converting USB-MIDI to 5-wire MIDI MP Hall of Fame Member Registered: 12/30/06 Posts: 9238 Loc: Brooklyn. As far as USB to Host goes, there's nothing yet to take USB only keyboards to midi modules and old keyboards. So for example, something like a PSR-E423 or 333, there's no way to connect it to something like a Motif Rack, unless you want to haul along a laptop or computer and rout the signal from the pc or mac to the other device's midi ports via a usb interface. That's too much work!

Another option I'm approaching is directly modifying the LPK25 to give it a new DIN output. I cracked it open last night and it looks like key-strikes - MIDI - USB is all done in one chip, so I'll have to pull the key-strike data and convert to MIDI externally. So it may be a bit of work. A pox on designers who do not add DIN MIDI to their boards.

That Studiologic CMK-137 looks perfect, why did is it discontinued? I guess it makes sense that the market for tiny controllers these days is for computer use more than live rigs, making the USB route more appealing to manufacturers now. (Though I find the emergence of full size boards with USB-only connections less forgivable.) It's a neat little board to have around. The only feature I wish it had was octave transposition buttons. It would make it a cinch to use as a left hand bass board, without having to program octave shifts into the patches on the receiving end.

It can connect up to 8 USB MIDI class compliant devices using standard USB hubs and bridge between two pairs of 5 pin DIN ports. A MIDI data management engine allows for the routing of MIDI data to specific MIDI ports, configurable using SYSEX commands.
It even will bridge MIDI data between two USB MIDI devices. All with no computer required. Other bonuses - works as standard MIDI interface for your Mac or PC, works as CoreMIDI compliant iOS interface for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch.
Check out our iConnectivity YouTube channel for some video demos. Also check out #2345147 - 10/04/11 09:21 AM Re: Converting USB-MIDI to 5-wire MIDI Platinum Member Registered: 05/05/06 Posts: 1304. The iConnectMIDI looks great, but I can't justify 180$ to make two. What are you hoping to practice? Yeah I know, it sucks, but it's (marginally) better than nothing. I end up mostly resigned to practicing new pieces hands separate.
I always try to get near a guitar center or sam ash and hang out there for half an hour a night, but that's not always available. My micron is a little better with 3 octaves, but I feel like the knobs are going to fall off in transit. Where are the robust 3-4 octave DPs? #2345534 - 10/05/11 12:20 PM Re: Converting USB-MIDI to 5-wire MIDI KC Ambassador of Goodwill 10k Club Registered: 11/12/03 Posts: 12345 Loc: Toronto, ON.

And iThing with a piano app and a keyboard like the XKey25 or the new Xkey 37 have full-size keys and are perfect for travel and playing on the go. The Xkey 37 is about $200 and comes with an adapter for sustain, expression and 5 pin MIDI DIN so you could also use it with you module if you don't have an iOS device.
